“Silicon Valley has made a name for itself as the birthplace of some pretty big ideas. But if Lance Knobel has his way, people will soon be thinking of Berkeley as a comparable hub of innovation — albeit, seeing as it’s Berkeley, a hub with an open-minded, free-thinking spirit all its own.”

So goes the opening of an article in JWeekly about the inaugural Uncharted: The Berkeley Festival of Ideas.

Writer Emma Silvers explains how Berkeleyside, the independent news site co-founded by Lance Knobel that is producing Uncharted, held a sold-out event in 2012 featuring the “three Michaels of Berkeley” — Chabon, Lewis and Pollan. It was such a successful evening that Berkeleyside wanted to follow it up with something even bigger that had the same resonance — “with great ideas, great conversation, and a lot of fun,” as Frances Dinkelspiel, co-founder of Berkeleyside said.
